There are holiday parks and then there's Woodlakes. Set among a series of private fishing lakes in the heart of rural Norfolk, it has a quality to it that's genuinely difficult to pin down — something to do with the light on the water, the unhurried pace, the sense that you've found somewhere that not everyone knows about.
The park takes its name from the lakes that run through it, and they're central to the experience. Whether you're a serious carp angler, someone who fancies a go with a rod for the first time, or just someone who likes the idea of a morning coffee looking out over still water with the mist coming off it, the lakes set the tone.
The accommodation ranges from cosy cedar lodges to more spacious executive models, many with their own private hot tubs. All are set within the parkland landscape — there's no sense of being packed in. The style is comfortable and well-equipped without being over-designed.
Woodlakes sits in a quiet part of Norfolk — not the Broads, not the coast, but with easy access to both. The drive to Holkham beach takes under an hour and passes through some of the county's most photogenic villages. Wells-next-the-Sea and Burnham Market are both worth an afternoon.
The guests who return to Woodlakes year after year tend to give the same reason: it's the combination of the setting, the space and the simplicity. Nothing puts on a show. It just quietly delivers.
